What is Flying Termites

Flying Termites

Flying termites, also known as alates or swarmers, they are reproductive termites that leave their colonies to mate and start new colonies. They have wings and are often mistaken for flying ants, but can be distinguished by their straight, bead-like antennae, uniform waist, and equal-sized wings.

Flying termites are often seen swarming in large numbers in the spring or fall, typically after a rain shower or during humid weather. They are attracted to light and may fly toward windows or light fixtures. Once they find a mate, they shed their wings and start a new colony together.

Termites are known to cause extensive damage to wooden structures, so if you notice flying termites in or around your home, it is important to take action and contact a pest control professional to assess the situation and implement appropriate measures to prevent an infestation.
